How to get rid of sleep lines on your face
Woke up with your pillow printed on your cheek? Here's why it happens and what helps.
You know the look. You wake up, glance in the mirror, and there's a deep crease running across one cheek like a map of your pillowcase. It's especially common if you sleep on your side or your stomach.
Why it happens
When your face is pressed into a pillow for hours, your skin gets folded and held in place. Cotton's texture grips the skin, so the folds set deeper and hang around longer.
The quick fixes
- Cool water. A splash, or a cool cloth for a minute.
- Moisturize. Hydrated skin bounces back faster.
- Massage. Gentle upward strokes while you apply your morning moisturizer.
- Coffee. Not for your face. For you, while you wait twenty minutes for it to fade.
The long-term fix
- Change your surface. Silk lets your face glide instead of being gripped and folded.
- Try back sleeping for part of the night. A pillow under your knees makes it more comfortable.
- Go softer. A softer pillow means your face sinks and folds less.
You can't stop sleeping on your face. You can change what your face sleeps on.
Sleep lines aren't wrinkles
Morning creases are temporary. A pillowcase isn't a wrinkle treatment, and we won't pretend it is. But spending fewer hours a night with your face pressed and folded just makes sense.
The short version
Sleep lines come from skin being pressed and gripped. Silk reduces the grip, and hydrated skin bounces back faster.
