How to fix dry, tight skin overnight
Winter heating, long flights and cold wind all take their toll. Night is your chance to recover.
If you live somewhere with a real winter (hello, Canada), you know the feeling: tight, flaky, slightly angry skin that no amount of lotion seems to fix. Nighttime is when you can do the most about it.
In the bathroom
- Lukewarm, never hot. Hot showers feel amazing and strip your skin.
- Swap your cleanser. Cream or balm instead of foaming.
- Moisturize damp skin, within a minute of patting dry.
In the bedroom
- Get a humidifier. Heated winter air is drier than you think.
- Keep the room cool, not toasty.
- Sleep on silk. Cotton absorbs moisture and your creams. Silk absorbs much less, so your skin keeps more of both.
Fix dry skin at night, when nothing is working against you.
Ingredients worth knowing
Look for ceramides, glycerin and hyaluronic acid. On the driest patches, finish with a thicker cream or balm.
Hands and lips
A thick hand cream and a lip balm at bedtime do a lot of quiet work while you sleep.
The short version
Use a gentle cleanser, moisturize damp skin, run a humidifier and sleep on silk to keep moisture where it belongs.
