How to bring a little Caribbean calm home
Barbados has a pace all its own. Here's how we carry that feeling back to Canada.
There's a particular kind of calm you feel on Barbados. Mornings start early and slow. Afternoons stretch. Evenings end with the breeze coming in off the water and nobody in a rush to be anywhere. Then you fly home, and within a week you're answering emails in bed. Here's how we try to hold on to it.
Let the light in
Island houses are built around light and air: shutters, open windows, pale walls. Open your curtains the second you wake up and let the morning in.
Keep it simple
Clean lines, natural materials, nothing you don't need. Calm comes from space as much as from stuff.
Bring the colors
Sand, coral plaster, sea glass, deep water. They're the colors of the island we love, and the ones we named our pillowcases after.
Slow the evening down
Dinner without screens. A short walk after. A long shower. The point isn't to fill the evening. It's to stop rushing it.
On warm island nights, slipping onto cool silk was the small luxury that let us finally rest. It still is, wherever we are.
The short version
Light, air, simple spaces, island colors and unhurried evenings. Calm is mostly a matter of pace.
